Chinese zodiac years are easiest to use as a lookup first. Enter a birth year, find the animal sign and element, then slow down if the birthday falls in January or February because the zodiac year usually changes around Lunar New Year.

If you were born in January or before Lunar New Year in 1994, check the previous year's sign before using this result. For exact boundary dates, use a full birth date and a Bazi calculator rather than year alone.

The year result is useful, but it is not a complete personal reading. A Chinese zodiac year is one public layer of the chart. A full Bazi chart also reads birth month, day, hour, timezone, hidden stems, and element balance, so treat a year-only answer as a starting point rather than a fixed verdict.

Chinese Zodiac Years By Animal

The animal cycle repeats every twelve years. If you only know the birth year, this table gives the quick answer most people are searching for.

Pig1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019, 2031

For a normal year lookup, use the row that contains the year. For an early-year birthday, especially before Lunar New Year, check the previous year as well. Someone born in early January 1994, for example, should not automatically assume Wood Dog without checking the exact date boundary.

Why Exact Year Searches Belong Here

Searches such as 1990 chinese zodiac, 1994 chinese zodiac, and 1995 chinese zodiac are real questions, but they do not need three separate blog articles on FateFolio. They are better handled as examples inside one stronger Chinese zodiac years guide.

Search phraseQuick resultBetter next step
1990 chinese zodiacMetal HorseCheck whether the birthday is before January 27, 1990, then read the year as one Bazi layer.
1994 chinese zodiacWood DogCheck whether the birthday is before February 10, 1994, then compare the full chart if timing matters.
1995 chinese zodiacWood PigCheck whether the birthday is before January 31, 1995, then use element balance for deeper context.
1982 chinese zodiacWater DogUse Dog as the animal layer and Water as the stem element, then verify the early-year boundary.
2000 chinese zodiacMetal DragonTreat the Dragon label as a broad year marker, not a complete personality profile.
2014 chinese zodiacWood HorseUse the year for a quick family or cultural lookup; use Bazi for personal interpretation.

This structure avoids thin duplicate content. The exact-year examples still get answered, but the main page also explains why a year result can be incomplete.

Animal Element And Stem Branch Layers

The animal sign comes from the twelve Earthly Branches. The element comes from the ten Heavenly Stems. Together, stems and branches form a sixty-year cycle.

That is why two Horse years are not identical. 1990 is Metal Horse, while 2014 is Wood Horse and 2026 is Fire Horse. The animal repeats every twelve years, but the stem element changes as the sixty-year cycle advances.

ElementThe visible year element from the Heavenly Stem1994 is Wood

The Five Elements are not personality stickers. In Bazi, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water describe relationships of support, output, control, resources, and balance.

How To Use A Year Result Well

A Chinese zodiac year result works best when the question is simple: "What animal year am I?" or "Which animal year is 1990?" It becomes weaker when the question asks for destiny, compatibility, health, money, or a serious relationship decision.

Use the result in this order:

  1. Confirm the animal sign from the birth year.
  2. Check January or February birthdays against the Lunar New Year boundary.
  3. Add the element to avoid flattening every animal year into the same meaning.
  4. Read the year as a social and family layer, not the whole person.
  5. Use Bazi when you need the month, day, hour, and timing cycles.

For compatibility, avoid deciding from animal signs alone. Dog, Horse, Pig, Dragon, or any other animal can be a useful symbol, but real relationship timing is better read through two complete charts, element balance, Day Masters, and branch interactions.

When A Full Bazi Chart Matters

Chinese zodiac year as one layer inside a full Bazi chart

A year lookup gives one pillar. A full Bazi reading has four pillars: year, month, day, and hour. The Day Master is the reference point for the whole chart, which is why two people born in the same zodiac year can feel very different.

Use a full chart when you are asking:

  • whether a January or February birthday belongs to the current or previous zodiac year
  • how the year element interacts with the rest of the chart
  • whether a relationship has supportive or stressful timing patterns
  • why a specific annual cycle feels active, blocked, or transitional
  • how a personality theme changes when the Day Master and element balance are considered

FateFolio's Bazi flow asks for birth date, optional birth time, gender, and timezone because those details change the chart. If you only want a quick animal sign, the calculator on this page is enough. If you want a fuller reading, use the Bazi page and the related Wiki entries for Day Master, Element Balance, and Annual Cycle.

FAQ

What is my Chinese zodiac sign by year?

Find your birth year in the table or enter it in the calculator. If the birthday is in January or before Lunar New Year, check the previous year's sign too.

What is the difference between animal sign and element?

The animal comes from the twelve Earthly Branches. The element comes from the Heavenly Stem of that year. Together they create labels such as Metal Horse, Wood Dog, and Wood Pig.

Is 1990 Chinese zodiac Metal Horse?

Usually yes for people born from January 27, 1990 onward. People born before that date should check the previous lunar year before using Metal Horse.

Is 1994 Chinese zodiac Wood Dog?

Usually yes for people born from February 10, 1994 onward. Early 1994 birthdays should check the previous year boundary first.

Is 1995 Chinese zodiac Wood Pig?

Usually yes for people born from January 31, 1995 onward. People born before Lunar New Year in 1995 should check the previous zodiac year.

Can a zodiac year predict my future?

No. Use it as cultural and symbolic context. For serious choices, combine ordinary judgment with qualified advice when needed, and treat metaphysical readings as reflective rather than deterministic.
